Students complete coursework focused on learning about world cultures and international diversity, demonstrate elementary proficiency in a world language, and participate in experiential learning opportunities that engage them with international communities locally & abroad. At least one of these experiences must take place internationally, through a study abroad program, internship, or research placement abroad. 

The credential highlights students who have actively connected their academic studies with real-world global engagement. It recognizes students who have taken intentional steps to develop the knowledge, cultural awareness, and professional skills required for careers and leadership in global workplaces and multicultural contexts.

Participation in the certificate program gives students formal recognition of their demonstrated commitment to global learning & intercultural engagement.

Completion Requirements

Students must complete the following to earn the Global Engagement Certificate:

  • 4 courses total, selected from approved university course list:
    • 1 World Culture
    • 1 International Diversity course
    • 2 World Language courses (or equivalent to 102 proficiency for non- UMB taught languages)
  • Experiential Learning:
    • Two (2) approved experiences required, at least one must be international. Students will complete two global experiences to apply their learning in real-world contexts.
